Amazon plans to build drive-through grocery stores with only 10,000 square feet of in-store space—far smaller than the average Walmart Supercenter, which occupies 187,000 square feet.
This efficiency will be fueled by Amazon’s vast wealth of data and experience with complex logistics. Amazon entered the grocery market in 2008 with AmazonFresh, a subscription-based fresh-food delivery service. Amazon has also recently entered the brick-and-mortar retail market, opening its first storefront last November, selling books to Seattle residents. If its plans for a new type of supermarket is successfully implemented, Amazon would become the nation’s fourth largest grocery store chain, after Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons.
Will you be doing groceries by drive through?
