Vinyl, an old medium, for music listening

Posted by on Mar 23, 2014

For this installment of the blog I am going to deviate from craft ales and cigars and focus on a hobby that will compliment the enjoyment of these two crafts, music!

Music is something that I am very passionate about and have been consumed by since before I can remember. The types of music, the ways you can listen to it be it, compact cassette, compact disc, mp3, minidisc (yes I had one of these), 8-track, reel-to-reel, and records. My extensive collection primarily consists of mp3s and cds, even a few minidisc recordings. While this portable way of listening to music was great, it was missing that experience that was brought alive with vinyl.

Back in November of 2013 we journeyed down to Florida to meet some friends and he had an awesome vinyl setup. A nice classic turntable from the 70s, along with an accompanying tube amplifier and speakers. The collection he was amassing was awesome and great to listen to while enjoying a cigar. That was all it took, i’m hooked! Research time, 3 months later. The purchase is made, based off the create review by thewirecutter.com

record_playerAn important consideration in this turntable setup, newer receivers that are available at chain electronic stores typically do not have a phono amp built-in and require an external phono amp, I bought this one unit. This setup is based on the turntable I got, be careful with the cartridge support of the pre amp, this for a magnetic phono cartridge unit.

ccrJust finalize everything with some rca cables, shorter the better. Then time to start listening to albums, the first one was..Creedence Clearwater Revival Willy and the Poor Boys. A great way, in my opinion, to test this setup out.

The turntable has a cover, but clearance makes it challenging to use with it on, I use it for storage.  This the start of a long and interesting hobby. For more information on records, check out discogs.com. I am on there and my growing collection is available.

The following two tabs change content below.

A person who enjoys the culture of craft ales and the hand made cigar industry with a deep appreciation. My desire and respect help spread this love while building a network to help learn and educate all participating in the community. I enjoy this journey and hope all who read my material find this same appreciation.
