If you are a new or experienced cigar smoker, then you have heard of the concept of resting a cigar. You might not be sure on the ins and outs of resting a cigar but you are familiar with the term. It is the intention of this article to educate the reader on the process of aging a cigar. We will cover what it is, how it is done, how it compares to aging a cigar, and the best practices. After reading this article you will understand when and how to rest your cigars for the ultimate smoking experience. Give aging a try and see how it works for you.

Why Resting Cigars Is Suggested

Why should cigars be rested? Resting cigars is suggested mainly for cigars that have been shipped to you. The shipping process exposes a cigar to a variety of temperatures. The temperature changes from hot to cold can alter the taste of a cigar and these changes can destroy the taste of a cigar. Resting is suggested so that the cigars can have time to mellow out and return to the state that they were before they were shipped. Please enjoy this article and put it to good use so that you can learn how resting your cigars alters their taste.

Resting Isn’t The Same As Aging A Cigar

Let’s first establish that resting a cigar is not the same as aging a cigar. When a cigar is aged, it is done to alter the taste of a cigar, to make it smoother or to bring out certain qualities in a cigar. Resting isn’t intended to do these thing but instead to combat the stress that a cigar goes through via shipping. Realize that they are two separate things and performed for different reasons.

The Process Is Very Much Subjective

The process of resting a cigar is very much subjective and isn’t even suggested by all experts or for all cigar brands. Resting is basically something that you will need to test out on your own to see if it makes a huge difference. Later in this article we will discuss how to properly test resting to see how much of a difference it makes for you. Some experts and hobbyist swear by resting, others do not. By running your own resting tests you will find out what works best for you.

How Long To Rest A Cigar

Under the next subtitle, we will get deeper into this but for starters it is suggested that a cigar be rested for around 30 days before smoking it. I know that for some of you that is too long to wait. Often times that wait is well worth it but there’s nothing wrong with reserving some cigars for immediate enjoyment and others for resting. As said before, the process is very much subjective and you will discover through trial and error what works best for you and your palette.

Approach It Like A Research Project (A/B Split Testing)

Let’s bring some organization into this project. I am suggesting that we approach this like a research project. Do you remember how for science project we would create different groups to test? We would have a control group where which didn’t under go any testing and an A/B group which were exposed to different types of testing. I am suggesting that we do the exact same thing for resting cigars. I would suggest that you set aside a couple of cigars to enjoy now, a few cigars to rest for 30 days and a few cigars to rest for 60 days. Label these cigars so that you can tell them apart. Keep a journal and report your findings at the appropriate times. Following this process will teach you if the resting process is needed for the brands that you smoke and it will teach you how long to rest your cigars before enjoying them.

As you can see, there’s a lot to discuss when it comes to this topic. If you have read this entire article, then you have a basis guide on resting cigars and an outline of how to go about it to determine what works best.
